Congratulations to Evan Wiens, FWS for passing the French Wine Scholar exam with highest honors !
"I am a passionate wine enthusiast. I think there is very little in the world that delivers such complete pleasure and joy as a great wine. For me, however, wine is more than a drink, it is also an academic pursuit; every wine has a unique story that can be studied that includes the biology of the grape, the nature of its environment, the chemistry of the soil, and geology of the land. The desire to understand all these other aspects of wine is what pushes me to learn more. The FWS was the perfect method by which to do so, since nowhere in the world is the story of wine more complex, varied, and intricate as in France.
Outside of the world of wine, I just finished Medical School and I’m starting as a Resident in Internal Medicine. Once residency is finished, I hope to expand upon the foundation that the FWS course has given me to hopefully become a Sommelier in the future.
Prior to FWS, I had done no formal training in wine. I did the FWS course during my third year of Medical School, and chose to do it through the WSG because of the flexibility of the program and the great resources that were provided to allow me to learn whenever I had some free time. It would have been impossible for me to attend weekly classes through a wine school, so the fact that such great resources (lectures, the study manual, and practice questions) were available and that the exam could be scheduled at my convenience were really fantastic attributes of the program.
My long-term goal is to one day become a Sommelier and to open a wine bar so that I can share my passion for wine with others, with the hope that it will bring them as much pleasure as it has to me. I think the FWS has not only provided me with a solid foundation for further studies, but it has also made drinking and understanding French wine immensely more enjoyable!"
