The New Face of France: The Seemingly Impossible Rise of Olivier Chanzy in Meursault
Olivier Chanzy is quite clearly part of the new generation of "can do" French. His triumphant story is a tale of determination and a dose of good luck. Several years back, he decided he was ready to make wine on a smaller scale than his parents' large business that was part domaine and part négociant.
The family couldn't come to satisfactory terms, so their holdings in Meursault were sold in 2008. Briefly owned by a rugby star who wanted to be a winery owner rather than operator, the business soon went into bankruptcy. By splicing-up the buildings and vineyards with a Russian bidder, Olivier was able to acquire the vineyards he hoped his parents would give him from the town hall.
Returning to Burgundy from the Rhône just before harvest in 2013, Olivier managed to buy to a winery, lay a new foundation, receive tanks and start harvest within a matter of days!
