    Detailed curriculum

The curriculum is taught by lead-instructor Elizabeth Gabay Master of Wine and Provence specialist.

    • The History of Provence

Provence – France’s oldest wine region, retains secrets. Today, it is best known for producing rosé wine. In this first webinar, we will explore the region’s history, discover what is hidden, how it has developed its current rosé pre-eminence and what has attracted mega-stars such as Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Sacha Lichine to come here and make wine.

    • The Geography of Provence

Just as rosé dominates the wine image of Provence, lavender fields and olive groves dominate our image of the Provençal landscape. Yet, over half of the region is mountainous giving the region an exciting complexity of Mediterranean heat and alpine coolness. Schist, clay and limestone soils add further nuance to the wines and tell another story from the ground up. There is more to Provence than meets the eye.

    • Looking at the Appellations

In this webinar, we shall discuss the art and craft of rosé winemaking and examine the two largest appellations: Côtes de Provence (with its four sub-appellations) and Coteaux Varois-en-Provence. Although both produce wines with many similarities, there are also subtle differences than manifest themselves in the glass.  Discover the many shades of pink.

    • The other Appellations

Think pink…but don’t lose sight of the red and white either! From Bellet in the southeast to Les Baux in the northwest, from Pierrevert in the north to Bandol and Cassis in the south, Provence offers a rich array of wine and wine styles. There is much more to this wine region than its popular pinks. Old vines, low yields, abundant sunshine…it all adds up to a palette of undiscovered (and undervalued) wine gems.

    Why Study Provence?

Provence is France’s oldest winemaking region. It is the only region in France and the only region in the world to focus primarily on the production of rosé wine. To reference scale, Provence produces 25 times the volume of rosé as Tavel!

With a rosé-producing legacy dating back over 2000 years, Provence has established the benchmark for producing fruity, but stylistically dry rosé. And with the establishment of the Rosé Wine Research and Experimentation Centre in 1999, the only research facility of its kind in the world, Provence further cements its future as the on-going leader in the category.

The region has been immortalized through the works of the impressionist artists Van Gogh, Cézanne, Matisse and Picasso and popularized in Peter Mayle’s book “A Year in Provence”. Its cities, Nice, Cannes, Saint Tropez, Arles and Aix, attract visitors from all over the world. And with good reason. Bordering the Mediterranean, Provence is awash in a rich cultural history.

This wine region is an ancient wine producer. Discover it anew!
