The Italian Wine Scholar Program was a great adventure!

I was in the Independent Study Format for Unit 1 and the Instructor-Led Format (with Andrea and Rob) for Unit 2. The latter was much better for keeping me on a study schedule and provided additional materials that helped me focus my learning. While the online learning modules were well designed, the Instructor-Led webinars provided a useful alternative context. The ability to study the pdf copies of the slide sets, rewatch webinars, and listen to the mp3-format audio recordings (which I hate to admit got me through thousands of yards of lap swimming in the weeks leading up to my test) was key.

The course material for both units was extremely well organized and provided a context that I could not easily glean from the available books and other information I have collected on the wines of Italy. There is just so much detailed information out there. Having access to a well-organized course construct within which to organize information is invaluable.

This was my first WSG course. Now I just need to decide which one to do next. Keep up the great educational work! Thanks to Andrea and Rob!

IWS U2 is particularly useful for broadening one’s knowledge of Italian wines and understanding the wider context of the history & culture of Italian wine regions. As a WSET Diploma graduate and Italian wine enthusiast, I came away from my studies with an enhanced knowledge-base and love of Italy and its many wine styles.

The IWS Unit 1 distance learning program was really well done. The instructor Andrea Eby led the classes in a very organized way. Andrea's enthusiasm for Italian Wines is evident and contagious. Andrea was very precise, clear, always happy to help and she answered all our questions. She was also always available and very efficient to answer the students' online questions via email. The study material is very straightforward and the information is written in a good structured way. I loved the program! Thanks, Giuseppina

Andrea Eby was an exceptional instructor. I really enjoyed sitting in her lectures and her tone and style made the material very easy to grasp. I am very glad I opted for the instructor-led format versus the independent study. I probably saved myself several months of additional prep for the exam by using the live sessions as an opportunity to create my chapter outlines. They helped me identify what was truly NTK in terms of the exam, and what I could leave as reference material.

I took the IWS Unit 2 distance learning program with an instructor lead format through Zoom during the pandemic. The instructor, Mark Shipway, was very personable, organized and knowledgeable. He picked quality wines for students to try at the tasting classes. The WSG online forum had extra modules, maps, practice quizzes and practice flash cards to help one prepare for the exam. I am happy with the quality of this course and I would definitely sign up for other future courses.

A big thank you to Ann and Sharon, who were excellent instructors!! I had previously done French Wine Scholar with Sharon, so I knew that her company Cru Consultancy maintained a high standard for their teachers. Ann was personable, engaging, informative and maintained a sense of humour - clearly, she enjoyed teaching the course.

I really enjoy the programs offered by the WSG and have completed both my French and Italian Wine Scholar programs. The material covers everything from history, geography and appellations, to how certain wine styles came about and the cultural importance these wines play in these areas. WSG offers a deep dive into regional wine styles in a way not given by most other wine study programs.

I'm a very big fan of WSG and I was very satisfied with all aspects of the Italian Wine Scholar program. The materials were extremely well presented, certainly very challenging, but very easy to follow. Having a WSET background, I was very impressed with details of each chapter, and the equal focus on both viticulture and vinification processes...plus the history portions of each chapter were outstanding. I plan to continue my education with the Wine Scholar Guild!

I found the IWS program to be a very in depth logical approach to the study of Italian wine with abundant study materials and resources that provide learners the means to absorb and retain the information being presented. The instructor led course was both informative and engaging. The entire staff was very responsive and conscientious. I look forward to future wine education classes with WSG.

Excellent program. I found the exam to be a bit of a memorization as opposed to a visual analysis. Perhaps a couple of essays as opposed to just multiple choice and also include tasting like WSET. Maybe I am biased to Wset as that is what I took first

The IWS course opened my eyes to the incredible diversity of Italian wine, from its ancient beginnings to developments and trends of the very recent past. It effectively conveyed the unique qualities of each wine region and the dynamism many appellations are experiencing today. As a serious student of wine, the course helped to take my knowledge to the next level and inspired me to continue the journey! Mille grazie!

It’s a fantastic immersion in the wine of Italy. It created a hunger for me to delve even deeper. I am fascinated by obscure grape varieties and the chapter on Campania did not disappoint in that category. The instructors are extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and share freely what they know. I will definitely be enrolling in other WSG courses.

The IWS unit 2 course is a fascinating and comprehensive look at the wine regions of Central and Southern Italy. I recommend it strongly as a resource for sommelier students or any wine lover looking for an in depth, well presented look into the extensive history, numerous unique grape varietals, geography, and cultural/winemaking traditions of the Italian peninsula. Undoubtedly, this is the finest course available anywhere on this subject matter, conveniently available online or in a classroom format. The manual is excellent, and there is a vast amount of additional study material available online that the student can access at his or her own pace. I found the class to be a reasonable priced, outstanding educational resource, and presented by top notch instructors at a pleasant pace to absorb the enormous amount of information covered.
