    Albert Sheen, Champagne ML

Congratulations to Albert Sheen for passing the Champagne Master Level exam with highest honors!

    About Albert:

I was a casual wine drinker for many years. I had subscriptions to Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate, but I didn’t start taking my wine studies seriously until a few years ago. I started taking course at the Wine House in Los Angeles and I was hooked! I try to attend as many tasting events in Los Angeles as I can.

I took the WSET Levels 1, 2 and 3 courses, and am currently enrolled in the WSET Diploma course. I also completed the French Wine Scholar course. The Champagne ML program was an excellent way to build upon my French Wine Scholar knowledge. It followed a similar format to the French Wine Scholar, but went more in-depth into the specifics of the Champagne region.

After I complete my WSET Diploma in Summer 2019, I also plan to enroll in the Italian Wine Scholar and Spanish Wine Scholar courses. I will be attending the Wine Scholar Guild study trips to the Loire and Alsace this year, and afterwards I plan to take the Loire ML and Alsace ML exams. Having taken the Champagne ML exam, I now know the level of detail and knowledge that the ML programs require. This knowledge will help me when I prepare for the Loire ML and Alsace ML exams.

The Champagne ML course has given me advanced knowledge of Champagne that I can use as I buy and taste Champagne going forward. The Champagne ML program will also be useful when I pursue my Master of Wine credential at some point.

    Lim Yee Chuin

Congratulations to Lim Yee Chuin, for passing the Champagne Master-Level exam with highest honors !

    About Lim Yee Chuin

"I am a wine enthusiast, who is especially in love with champagnes. I love to read about wine history, wine business, monitor wine prices, look at wine bottles, visit wine shops, watch wine related movies… (the list goes on) It all started when I decided that I needed to “break the code” of buying wines in the supermarkets where every bottle on the shelf looked ridiculously foreign to me. I began reading up on my own and started buying different wines to try. During my undergraduate exchange at Sciences Po (Paris), I took the opportunity to travel to some popular wine regions such as Champagne, Rhone Valley, Loire Valley and Bordeaux where I got the first hand experience of talking and learning from the winemakers. When I did my Masters Programme at Oxford University, I joined the Oxford University Blind Tasting Society where I really got to polish my wine knowledge. I also competed in several wine competitions in Europe and the Oxford-Cambridge Varsity Wine Competition. Wine travels were part and parcel of my holidays – I visited Champagne 5 times during that period!

I took the WSET Intermediate and Advanced level and passed with Distinction. I decided to take the Champagne ML exam purely out of interest and felt that it could help to enhance my knowledge specifically in champagne – and it definitely did! The syllabus was well-organised and even covered sparkling wines in the world. The Certified Sommelier exam, as well as Burgundy ML and FWS are exams possibly on the horizon, and perhaps I would go into the wine industry at some point. I am glad that I made the decision to take the Champagne ML exam, which is a step forward in achieving my dream in being a champagne specialist one day!

I believe all the ML exams help to further concretise the knowledge of each specific wine region and would be useful for anyone who wishes to go more in depth in their wine learning journey."

    Christine Campbell

Congratulations to Christine Campbell for passing the Champagne Master Level exam with highest honors !

    About Christine:

“I am a wine enthusiast, a wine writer and instructor. Five years ago, I started taking wine courses and became entirely hooked. I write on my personal blog, www.girlsgogrape.com, twice a month and am a wine instructor in Vancouver and the Okanagan Valley. I was encouraged to take a fault assessor course for our B.C. VQA and successfully graduated and have sat on the B.C. VQA assessment panel for three years. In this role, I assess and judge all of our B.C. VQA member wines for faults before they are released to market.

I currently hold my WSET Advanced Level 3 with Distinction as well as my French Wine Scholar with Highest Honors.

I will be enrolling in the WSET Diploma Studies Program as well as the Italian Wine Scholar Program. I am incredibly confident that my Master Level Champagne certification will assist me in my future studies both professionally and personally.

With the successful accomplishment of attaining my Master Level of Champagne certification; I now want to learn even more. This certification has given me the confidence to continue my wine education and I will look abroad for opportunities to learn ‘hands on’ in the Champagne region”.

    Kathryn Latour

Congratulations to Kathryn Latour for passing the Champagne Master-Level exam with honors!

    About Kathryn:

''I am a wine aficionado and student of wine. I teach Wine Marketing (and soon Luxury Marketing) so the Champagne region is particularly of interest to me professionally, and personally, one of my favorite styles of wine.

I received my diploma from the International Sommelier Guild, my sommelier certification from the Court of Master Sommeliers, and will be returning to the Master of Wine program next year. I found this class extremely helpful in getting deep knowledge into the Champagne region.

The webinar presentations were fabulous, very insightful, from experts in the region. I am hoping to offer the class to students here at Cornell and the broader Ithaca region to supplement work they are doing in their own wine studies.''

    Andrew Belcher

Congratulations to Andrew Belcher for passing the Champagne Master-Level exam with the highest honors!

    About Andrew:

''I am a wine enthusiast. My first real introduction to wines was years ago at University through the wines of Chablis and Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur Lie. Today I enjoy the tasting wines  from all over the globe, but I still love the wines of Chablis and also enjoy the wines of Southern Italy and the Champagne area.

My last visit to a wine area was to Bordeaux where i visited a number of Chateau across the region. Loved the wines of Sauternes.

This January I was at the Guildhall in London for the WSET Diploma presentation.

Having just completed the Champagne ML program, I am now working on the Bordeaux program. I enjoy these course as it helps to focus on specific areas that I have an interest with.

The wine tasting suggestions within the Master-Level program do help with understanding the differences in the specific regions and also encourage you to go out and try different producers and styles of wines.

Having visited the areas that I have studied or am studying does allow for a better context of the areas. The historical references are also very useful in putting everything in perspective.

    Sebastien Lafortune

Congratulations to Sebastien Lafortune from Alberta, Canada for successfully passing the Champagne Master-Level exam with the highest honors!

    About Sebastien:

''I started in the restaurant business when I was 15 and worked in that capacity for over 20 years. In the last 5 years I’ve worked on the retail side in a large store in Calgary, Alberta that focuses on educational seminars and tasting events. Working as a sommelier is great and I am continually learning new things in this ever-evolving business.

I am a certified sommelier with an ISG Diploma as well as a Level 3 WSET certification. I am always interested in learning new material, which is why I studied the Champagne course. I definitely see myself taking more classes as the course offered great in depth study of the region.  While I knew all the basics of Champagne, I was not as familiar as I am now with the geography and villages. This will definitely help when recommending specific styles to our customers.

As I mentioned above, with my greater understanding of the region as a whole and how each house is quite different from the others, this will be an asset when buying new champagnes for our stores. The course has made me want to pursue other courses from your offered programs as well as made me want to visit the region, which I have yet to do. I have always been a lover of Rhone Syrah and foresee myself taking that program in the near future. Maybe Alsace?''

    Mark Osburn

Congratulations to Mark Osburn for passing the Champagne Master-Level exam with the highest honors!

    About Mark:

''I sometimes wonder if I enjoy the aspect of studying wine over drinking a glass. My wine career has been diminutive in the grand scheme of it all, so every time I discover a new field of wine, I soak it up. Through this, you quickly understand the more you learn, the more you realize you don’t know. It’s a very humbling experience and I hope to never lose grasp of that.

I began my pursuit of wine in 2014 when I started working retail. Through this exposure, I joined a tasting group and catapulted myself into The Court of Master Sommeliers. Fast forwarding a year, I obtained my second-level certification and started working as a floor sommelier. As of right now, I’m aspiring to further my education in hopes to gear up for my advanced certification.

I would also love to implement my passion for writing, whether it’s a wine-related script or a book on the intricacies of champagne. As the years march onward, I want to be a passenger to the ever-changing world of wine. Writing a novel about the creative winemakers of Champagne and how their unique styles influence their wine is a distant, but achievable dream of mine. It’s all marketing and branding these days and Champagne seems to be losing touch with its heritage. A story is what makes wine great and I long to unearth the forgotten chapters buried within the soils of Champagne.

As mentioned above, Certified Sommelier is the only other title I currently hold. I have been gaining interest in the Institute of Masters of Wine and could see myself pursuing that in the near future. I very much approve the depth of material the Champagne Master Level course went into. Every class offered by the Wine Scholar Guild will be a necessity when I start actively pursuing tougher accreditations down the road.

Champagne is my main point of focus in the wine world and the amount of new material I discovered helped tremendously. It covered the history, viticulture, geology, climate, every aspect of Champagne. While I did master the provided material, it also opened new doors of independent learning within Champagne. Who would’ve thought I would be interested in selection massale and all things alike?  Without this class, my understanding of Champagne would’ve been a mile wide and an inch deep. Now, I’ve burrowed deeper and will continue to dig until I’ve exhausted all the tools available to me.''

    Clara de Nijs

Congratulations to Clara de Nijs from Netherlands for passing successfully the Champagne Master-Level exam with honors!

    About Clara:

''I had my first glass of champagne when I was fifteen years old, and it made a huge impression. Years went by before I started drinking it more regularly, and I developed an interest in grower champagnes. When it was time for a change in my life, a little less than four years ago, I thought about what would truly make me happy, and I could only think of one thing: working with champagne!

Not having any background in the wine business whatsoever,  I just went for the plunge, and started to import one of the small houses I‘d been loving for years. Through the following years I made a selection of grower champagnes I’m representing in the Netherlands, and I am proud of each and every one of them!

Before I started as an importer, I took the WSET intermediate and advanced courses for an overall knowledge of wine. But once I started working with champagne I was looking for a more detailed insight on this region. So when I came across the WSG Champagne Master Level course, I found what I’d been looking for! This program has taught me more than I could think of beforehand: it truly covers every aspect having to do with champagne.

This master level program has given me the tools to explain more precisely to my customers what is inside those bottles, and why each one of them is so special. I’m currently exploring ways to bring my knowledge out there as I’d like to take the subject of champagne a little bit further than the ‘usual’ tastings and I am looking forward to include all the profound knowledge into these and other future projects.''

    Tina Isbell

Hats off to Tina Isbell for passing the Champagne Master-Level exam with the highest honors!

    About Tina:

''After a hectic career in the ever-changing world of digital advertising, I turned my thirst (heh heh) for knowledge towards wine. I’d fallen in love with wine culture while motorcycling European wine regions with my husband – wine country is also beautiful riding country!  Now I’m combining those passions, for travel and for wine, by organizing wine tours for fellow enthusiasts through my company, Vino Hound; Germany/Alsace, Loire, Oregon, Piedmont, and Central Coast, California, are just a few of our recent destinations.

I’m also thrilled to be part of the team at Brookhaven Wines in Atlanta, GA.  It’s a warm, welcoming, neighborhood shop; we love providing wine education and lively events for our customers, whom we consider friends.

The French Wine Scholar certification, in addition to the WSET (3) Advanced certification, gave me a firm foundational knowledge of fine wine production around the globe.  Subsequent Master-Level programs for RhoneBordeaux and now Champagne, provide a confidence and depth of knowledge I can share with my classes, tasting groups, and tours.

The Champagne ML course, specifically, revealed the complexity of both the region and sparkling production, which I can’t wait to share with students – the bubbles taste even better when you understand what went into that glass!''

    Andrew MacLeod

Congrats to Andrew MacLeod for passing the Champagne Master-Level with the highest honors!

    About Andrew:

''I’m one of those sommeliers that have taken flight from the frenetic pace of restaurant life, now enjoying the relative calm of wine retail. Time to chat with customers is a fleeting luxury during a busy dinner service, so the slower pace of a wine boutique is a refreshing change.

My “aha!” moment came about working as the sommelier for The Savoy in London. Just one sip of the beautiful elixir that is mature champagne and everything came into focus. I’ll very happily drink a bottle of Beaujolais Cru, but opening a bottle of well-aged champagne is something closer to a spiritual experience. You could say that ever since I have been spreading the gospel of the bubbly.

This was my first course taken with the Wine Scholar Guild. I hold a sommelier diploma with ISG, and Level 3 with WSET. I found the ML program was perfect for the person looking for a more in-depth look at a region. The content is concise and the choice of presenters really makes the difference.

I think that the ML programs offer a sturdy foundation for understanding a region. You can always go on to learn the more esoteric things, but what you learn taking this course is something that you can always go back to.''
