    Michael Markarian

Congratulations to Michael Markarian, for passing the Champagne Master Level exam with highest honors!

    About Michael:

I work as a sommelier at Chez Billy Sud, a classic French bistro in the historic Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. I previously lived and studied in Tuscany, and have a passion for Italian wine, food, and culture, in addition to French wine and cuisine.

I am currently studying for the Court of Master Sommeliers’ Advanced Exam, and I wanted to strengthen my knowledge in certain areas, such as Champagne and Burgundy. Taking the Champagne and Bourgogne Master-Level programs helped deepen my understanding of those regions, especially in relation to house styles, producers, vintages, and winemaking and viticulture practices.

Since I work in a French restaurant, Champagne is very important! Starting an evening with Champagne can make any day of the week feel like a celebration and a special occasion. I hope to bring in more Champagne for our guests and give them an outstanding hospitality experience.

    Mário Márcio Lescano Júnior

Congratulations to Mário Márcio Lescano Júnior for passing the Champagne Master Level exam with highest honors!

    About Mario:

I am a wine enthusiast. I have always been passionate about wine and had a dream: to make a Professional Sommelier course. As a Major in the Brazilian Army, my dream had to wait for a while, but I was able to realize it in 2016.  What started out as a simple hobby turned into something else: through wine, I found my superpower. My power isn't in being a great oenophile, but in loving something enough to work hard at being better.  As I am quite superstitious, my aspirations now are: to successfully complete the WSET Level 4 Diploma in wines and all WSG Master-Levels.

After finishing the Professional Sommelier course given by the Brazilian Association of Sommeliers in 2017, I passed the WSET Level 3 in wines with distinction in wines in 2018. In the same year, I started my love affair with the Wine Scholar Guild.  I signed up for the French Wine Scholar program and have graduated with highest honors.  In 2019, I finished the Italian Wine Scholar program with highest honors, the Rhône Master-Level with highest honors, the Bourgogne Master-Level, and the Spanish Wine scholar program with highest honors.  Eno Cultura, the same provider that provided my French Wine Scholar course, brought the first WSET Level 4 Diploma class in wines class to South America and I got a spot.  In 2020, I passed the D1 exam, delivered my D6 assignment about Natural Wines and I am going to take the D4 exam in October. I finished the Champagne Master-Level with highest honors, the Alsace Master-Level with highest honors and at the end of the month I will take the Provence Master-Level exam.

I love all the programs offered by the Wine Scholar Guild.  Champagne Master-Level, in particular, will help me in the short term, as I am taking the WSET Diploma D4 exam next month. In the long run, it is a program that changed my life and the view I had of the Champagne region. I learned a lot! This will definitely help me in future courses that life will allow me to take.

    Andrés Medrano

Congratualations to Andrés Medrano, for passing the Champagne Master Level program with highest honors!

    About Andrés:

Andrés has a background in International Business. During his second life, he has spent more than 10 years in Paris honing his culinary skills & knowledge. Starting in 2008 at the famous FERRANDI, school of culinary arts in Paris, he learned the hard way the fine art of pastry & cuisine, apprenticing in noted Michelin-starred restaurants. Inspired by French cuisine, he then had the opportunity to study alongside European champion chef Olivier Boudot to discover secrets of French bread-making at the international Cordon Bleu school.

Discovering a more epicurean penchant, he then left to study for the globally recognized Wine & Spirit Education trust (WSET) level 3 qualification & a master of Champagne with the Wine Scholar Guild.

Now, armed with both the skills of a Sommelier & culinary nous, he is bringing the disciplines together as a food & wine educator in Paris, France with his recently created company www.wetasteparis.com, leading bespoke, fun, relaxed, ‘under the skin of the city’ tours around Paris’ independent delicatessens and vintners. He is passionate about biodynamic farming, fermented food & the history of arguably the finest cuisine in the world.

He aspires to develop his educational business and to be able to take more travelers to visit the Champagne vineyards for 1 day tours from Paris & launch a fun “natural wine bar tour” this year.

The Champagne Master Level program provided outstanding insight & accurate details delivered by international Champagne experts paired with a solid book truly written by a passionate educator and the webinars complemented beautifully all the learnings. This diploma has increased his deep appreciation for arguably the best drink in the world.

Andrés is planning to continue studying with the WSG & obtain the FWS - French Wine Scholar diploma this year & the IWS next year.

    Jane Owen

Congratulations to Jane Owen for passing the Champagne Master Level exam with highest honors!

    About Jane:

As a mother of three children that have recently ventured out on their own, I have found myself relishing more "me" time. I have always enjoyed and have been interested in learning more about wine, but only recently have I found the time to really indulge in the passion of wine.

Passion is an interesting word with so many connotations. To me having a passion for wine is more than just the enjoyment of a beverage with dinner. It means an interest and intensity that goes well beyond wine itself. The study of wine can transport you to another place and time. History, location, viticulture, geology, the people and cuisine are really what wine is about. The further you study, the more interesting it becomes; and the more passionate you become in every way.

I do not consider myself a professional in any way when it comes to wine. My public soirée into the wine world was quite happenstance. My excitement about studies in wine, champagne in particular, became known within my community. Several friends asked if I would share this knowledge in some way with them. This request evolved into an event that started as a casual tasting among friends. I now offer guided educational tastings of sparkling wines and champagne for groups as a charity event for non-profit organizations in our area. To date "Bubbly & Blade" has raised several thousand dollars for worthy causes in the Southern Indiana area.

Once you start wine studies, does it every really stop?

I am a Sabreur member of the Confrérie du Sabre D'or, however I'm embarrassed to say (or not; the study of anything has to begin somewhere) that the WSG Champagne ML course and exam is my first wine certification. I love taking on new challenges. I have found that studies with WSG; with it's distance learning, live webinars and study trips are a perfect fit and a tremendous opportunity.

I am currently enrolled in the Bourgogne ML course with the WSG as well as studying the coursework for the Certified Specialist of Wine with the Society of Wine Educators.

I have found that the WSG offers an all-encompassing educational wine experience. I was fortunate enough to experience one of the wine study trips to the Champagne region offered by the WSG after I completed the online instructor-led course. It was truly a capstone to the program that helped bring the information from this intensive study course to life. I look forward to future study courses and trips with this wonderful wine school.

    Albert Sheen, Champagne ML

Congratulations to Albert Sheen for passing the Champagne Master Level exam with highest honors!

    About Albert:

I was a casual wine drinker for many years. I had subscriptions to Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate, but I didn’t start taking my wine studies seriously until a few years ago. I started taking course at the Wine House in Los Angeles and I was hooked! I try to attend as many tasting events in Los Angeles as I can.

I took the WSET Levels 1, 2 and 3 courses, and am currently enrolled in the WSET Diploma course. I also completed the French Wine Scholar course. The Champagne ML program was an excellent way to build upon my French Wine Scholar knowledge. It followed a similar format to the French Wine Scholar, but went more in-depth into the specifics of the Champagne region.

After I complete my WSET Diploma in Summer 2019, I also plan to enroll in the Italian Wine Scholar and Spanish Wine Scholar courses. I will be attending the Wine Scholar Guild study trips to the Loire and Alsace this year, and afterwards I plan to take the Loire ML and Alsace ML exams. Having taken the Champagne ML exam, I now know the level of detail and knowledge that the ML programs require. This knowledge will help me when I prepare for the Loire ML and Alsace ML exams.

The Champagne ML course has given me advanced knowledge of Champagne that I can use as I buy and taste Champagne going forward. The Champagne ML program will also be useful when I pursue my Master of Wine credential at some point.

    Lim Yee Chuin

Congratulations to Lim Yee Chuin, for passing the Champagne Master-Level exam with highest honors !

    About Lim Yee Chuin

"I am a wine enthusiast, who is especially in love with champagnes. I love to read about wine history, wine business, monitor wine prices, look at wine bottles, visit wine shops, watch wine related movies… (the list goes on) It all started when I decided that I needed to “break the code” of buying wines in the supermarkets where every bottle on the shelf looked ridiculously foreign to me. I began reading up on my own and started buying different wines to try. During my undergraduate exchange at Sciences Po (Paris), I took the opportunity to travel to some popular wine regions such as Champagne, Rhone Valley, Loire Valley and Bordeaux where I got the first hand experience of talking and learning from the winemakers. When I did my Masters Programme at Oxford University, I joined the Oxford University Blind Tasting Society where I really got to polish my wine knowledge. I also competed in several wine competitions in Europe and the Oxford-Cambridge Varsity Wine Competition. Wine travels were part and parcel of my holidays – I visited Champagne 5 times during that period!

I took the WSET Intermediate and Advanced level and passed with Distinction. I decided to take the Champagne ML exam purely out of interest and felt that it could help to enhance my knowledge specifically in champagne – and it definitely did! The syllabus was well-organised and even covered sparkling wines in the world. The Certified Sommelier exam, as well as Burgundy ML and FWS are exams possibly on the horizon, and perhaps I would go into the wine industry at some point. I am glad that I made the decision to take the Champagne ML exam, which is a step forward in achieving my dream in being a champagne specialist one day!

I believe all the ML exams help to further concretise the knowledge of each specific wine region and would be useful for anyone who wishes to go more in depth in their wine learning journey."

Congratulations to Christine Campbell for passing the Champagne Master Level exam with highest honors !

    About Christine:

“I am a wine enthusiast, a wine writer and instructor. Five years ago, I started taking wine courses and became entirely hooked. I write on my personal blog, www.girlsgogrape.com, twice a month and am a wine instructor in Vancouver and the Okanagan Valley. I was encouraged to take a fault assessor course for our B.C. VQA and successfully graduated and have sat on the B.C. VQA assessment panel for three years. In this role, I assess and judge all of our B.C. VQA member wines for faults before they are released to market.

I currently hold my WSET Advanced Level 3 with Distinction as well as my French Wine Scholar with Highest Honors.

I will be enrolling in the WSET Diploma Studies Program as well as the Italian Wine Scholar Program. I am incredibly confident that my Master Level Champagne certification will assist me in my future studies both professionally and personally.

With the successful accomplishment of attaining my Master Level of Champagne certification; I now want to learn even more. This certification has given me the confidence to continue my wine education and I will look abroad for opportunities to learn ‘hands on’ in the Champagne region”.

    Kathryn Latour

Congratulations to Kathryn Latour for passing the Champagne Master-Level exam with honors!

    About Kathryn:

''I am a wine aficionado and student of wine. I teach Wine Marketing (and soon Luxury Marketing) so the Champagne region is particularly of interest to me professionally, and personally, one of my favorite styles of wine.

I received my diploma from the International Sommelier Guild, my sommelier certification from the Court of Master Sommeliers, and will be returning to the Master of Wine program next year. I found this class extremely helpful in getting deep knowledge into the Champagne region.

The webinar presentations were fabulous, very insightful, from experts in the region. I am hoping to offer the class to students here at Cornell and the broader Ithaca region to supplement work they are doing in their own wine studies.''

    Andrew Belcher

Congratulations to Andrew Belcher for passing the Champagne Master-Level exam with the highest honors!

    About Andrew:

''I am a wine enthusiast. My first real introduction to wines was years ago at University through the wines of Chablis and Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur Lie. Today I enjoy the tasting wines  from all over the globe, but I still love the wines of Chablis and also enjoy the wines of Southern Italy and the Champagne area.

My last visit to a wine area was to Bordeaux where i visited a number of Chateau across the region. Loved the wines of Sauternes.

This January I was at the Guildhall in London for the WSET Diploma presentation.

Having just completed the Champagne ML program, I am now working on the Bordeaux program. I enjoy these course as it helps to focus on specific areas that I have an interest with.

The wine tasting suggestions within the Master-Level program do help with understanding the differences in the specific regions and also encourage you to go out and try different producers and styles of wines.

Having visited the areas that I have studied or am studying does allow for a better context of the areas. The historical references are also very useful in putting everything in perspective.

    Sebastien Lafortune

Congratulations to Sebastien Lafortune from Alberta, Canada for successfully passing the Champagne Master-Level exam with the highest honors!

    About Sebastien:

''I started in the restaurant business when I was 15 and worked in that capacity for over 20 years. In the last 5 years I’ve worked on the retail side in a large store in Calgary, Alberta that focuses on educational seminars and tasting events. Working as a sommelier is great and I am continually learning new things in this ever-evolving business.

I am a certified sommelier with an ISG Diploma as well as a Level 3 WSET certification. I am always interested in learning new material, which is why I studied the Champagne course. I definitely see myself taking more classes as the course offered great in depth study of the region.  While I knew all the basics of Champagne, I was not as familiar as I am now with the geography and villages. This will definitely help when recommending specific styles to our customers.

As I mentioned above, with my greater understanding of the region as a whole and how each house is quite different from the others, this will be an asset when buying new champagnes for our stores. The course has made me want to pursue other courses from your offered programs as well as made me want to visit the region, which I have yet to do. I have always been a lover of Rhone Syrah and foresee myself taking that program in the near future. Maybe Alsace?''
