Congratulations to Daniel French, IWS for passing the Italian Wine Scholar exam with the highest honors with the San Francisco Wine School!
About Daniel French:
''I am first a wine enthusiast, and second a wine professional. I am one who chose this profession because of my love of wine and its soothing effects on the human condition. My favorite quote concerning wine is Thomas Jefferson’s quote: “No nation is drunken where wine is cheap, and none sober where the dearness of wine substitutes ardent spirits as the common beverage.” My favorite book is, “The Spirituality of Wine,” by Gisela H. Kreglinger. Wine to me is healthful in an immense number of ways. References to the vine and wine in the Bible have helped me come to terms with my love for such an intellectual and liberating gift.
Several years ago when I decided I wanted to make wine my profession I studied for and earned a certified pin from the Court of Master Sommeliers. This served me well until I was hired at a restaurant where the wine list was primarily Italian. I took this opportunity to study and dive deep into what I had always been told was the most daunting of countries to learn. I initially took the Italian Wine Professional certification. Later, I discovered the Wine Scholar Guild and took the Italian Wine Scholar program. This was definitely the most in-depth study program I have taken, and will be a model on which I approach future personal studies.
The Italian Wine Scholar program’s material helped me put wine in the context of history. Their presentation of the material flows like a story to me. This makes memory retention easier, and now it gives me more of a story to share when I present a wine.
