Congratulations to Helena Edgerton, FWS, for passing the French Wine Scholar exam with highest honors!

    About Helena:

I love my role as a wine educator for Sydney Wine Academy. I have been an educator for almost three years (although I have been in the wine trade a lot longer!) and it is an absolute pleasure to teach my students. I actually first taught in the classroom as an English assistant in a French school in the Loire Valley. My passion for wine stemmed from an internship at Moët et Chandon. I was fortunate to then work for a wine tour company, organising and accompanying tours (often led by Steven Spurrier, featured in the latest Wine Scholar Guild webinar!) for wine lovers across France and Spain. Nothing beats visiting the regions firsthand; seeing the vineyards, meeting the winemakers to bring the wines to life. Closer to my present home in Sydney, I worked in wine sales for a fine wine distribution company for many years, gaining a great appreciation for Australian wines, whilst working alongside fantastic, like-minded passionate people. Following  further wine study back in the UK, I knew I wanted to share my passion for wine and my wine knowledge as a wine educator and so, here I am!

I hold the Introductory Sommelier Certificate from the Court of Master Sommeliers and I graduated from my WSET Diploma in 2015. The French Wine Scholar proved to be the perfect complimentary partner of the Diploma. The Diploma encompasses the global world of wine, so it was wonderful to focus my study purely on French wine regions, their history, French appellations and how the regions have or haven’t changed in recent times. I would love to do some of the  French Wine Scholar Guild masters programmes. But I am also keen to study the new Spanish Wine Scholar, as my next undertaking and I hope to subsequently offer that course to students at Sydney Wine Academy.

I look forward to teaching the next French Wine Scholar course to our students at Sydney Wine Academy and inspiring more French wine lovers!
