Congratulations to Rebecca Apley, FWS, for passing the French Wine Scholar exam with highest honors with the Yorkshire Wine School, England.
I work with a variety of clients in the industry through my hospitality business, Apfelbaum Ltd., creating events (we’ve won awards!), delivering consultancy and training, and sharing knowledge about cocktails, spirits, beer - and of course - wine. From relaxed and intimate evenings to teaching more formal WSET qualifications, I’m very passionate about wine education becoming more accessible, and I hope that my work reflects that.
I’ve especially loved my work for the Yorkshire Wine School, who have given me a platform to learn every day as well as a place to connect with so many wonderful people interested in wine.
I adored studying WSET L2 under Laura Kent, it really helped me access the world of wine when I was first starting out. I’ve since taken further WSET qualifications in wine, spirits, and sake, including their Educators course, but it has been wonderfully refreshing to study a totally different program in French Wine Scholar. Achieving a mark like this in such a prestigious course makes me feel so proud of my progress.
Of course I expect FWS to help me with my Diploma in wine and future studies, but more than that; it’s the first course that’s really helped me get to grips with French wine in all its complexity - the history, the legalese, and the character of the wines themself. The story of wine is the story of the land, and of the people who farm that land, and FWS really gets that across. After the experience of FWS, I’m hooked! I would love to be able to take further programs with the Wine Scholar Guild: I’ll be dreaming of all the wines we’ll get to taste for Italian Wine Scholar especially!
