Congratulations to Rosalie Fanale, FWS for passing the French Wine Scholar exam with highest honors with the Capital Wine School in Washington DC!

About Rosalie Fanale:

''I am a wine enthusiast and a dedicated student. Becoming a wine professional, probably an educator, is indeed something I’m thinking about. Wine is a personal passion and an academic pursuit that builds on my training as an anthropologist. For me as for so many others, the world of wine presents a never-ending path of learning and research. I have a special interest in Old World wines, with France at the top of the list, and in translating Old World wines for those who are new to what they have to offer.

I have to share that the Wine Scholar Guild’s Director of Education Lisa Airey was my first true wine teacher. Although my interest in wine is longstanding, it grew gradually over the years as I traveled, worked and lived overseas and tasted wines that left haunting memories and piqued my curiosity to learn more. It was a series of in-person lectures on the wines of France that Lisa gave in 2009 and 2010 in Washington, D.C., where I live, that sparked my desire to pursue in-depth study. After those inspiring sessions, I began to taste and read more widely, took every wine class I could, and my academic interests grew.

I decided to pursue formal wine studies with WSET. I now hold the WSET Level 3 award and will soon begin the Diploma program.  The Wine Scholar Guild offers the perfect avenue to deepen one’s wine learning in parallel with the WSET track, as it provides in-depth knowledge of the highest priority countries in the WSET program -- France, Italy and Spain.

As for Wine Scholar Guild programs, right now my focus is on France. In early 2017, I obtained the Rhone Master-Level certificate with highest honors, and am enrolled in the Bourgogne and Alsace Master-Levels.  I have been fortunate to have taken part in two Master-Level immersion trips (Bourgogne and Alsace) and have to say that they are a spectacular opportunity to make the coursework tangible in terms of vignerons, terroir, winemaking, cultural heritage and history, and the modern business of wine.  You may see me on future trips!''
