Paul Gibson, IWS

Congratulations to Paul Gibson, IWS, for achieving highest honors in the Italian Wine Scholar exam with Sussex Wine School.

About Paul:

Wine is something that I have taken more seriously over the last few years, I love the craftmanship and history surrounding the whole industry. I have worked in hospitality for over 20 years, in bars and nightclubs and so wine has never been a huge part of my working life.

However, as Head of Operations for 6 pubs in the South East, I wanted to learn more about good wine to ensure our customers have as broad and interesting wine list as possible. I would like to get to a point where I’m using my knowledge to highlight some of the exciting grapes, Vineyards and wine styles that I have discovered during my studies and introduce them to as many people as possible.

So far, I have completed WSET Levels 1-3 in wine and most recently my WSG Italian Wine Scholar course. I really enjoyed the way the IWS course was broken up into digestible chunks and feel that I have come away with a good level of understanding of what is a hugely varied wine country. I loved exploring the lesser known local grapes and wine making methods

Whilst I find written exams challenging, the multiple choice exam format suits me down to the ground. It is my aim to complete both the French and Spanish WSG courses over the next year or so and continue to learn as much as I can.

By completing the other WSG courses I will bring my knowledge on both France and Spain up to a similar level before starting to look further afield perhaps...
