Starting May 2013, the French Wine Society will offer week-long immersion study trips to some of the top wine regions in France.

The trips will be highly educational in nature. Trips will be coupled with the study of the FWS’s corresponding regional Master-Level Study & Certification program.

Prior to the trip, participants will receive access to the region’s Master-Level study Manual and Online Study Program in order to get the most out of the trip.

One of our lead Master-Level instructors will accompany the group for the entire week of the trip through classroom instruction, tutored tastings, visits to domains and vineyards centered on fascinating educational themes each time, meals with special guests including vignerons, oenologists or wine journalists, and much more.

All participants will be registered for the region’s Master-Level exam which can be proctored online once back home.

To maximize the experience, we will keep these trips to smaller groups of about 18 students each, allowing us to get access to very special people and places.

"Thank you for going to Italy with us. I loved it as our best trip ever. Lauriann as our master planner had designed the trip perfect for me. Great hotels, wonderful food with a beautiful sections of wineries to tour. The truffle hunt and cheese farm were a great add on. Claudia and Anna were both delightful as our local hosts.  But as always the best part of the trip was you our fellow travelers."

5 great reasons we think you might love to join us on a wine study trip:

    1. TASTINGS TAILORED FOR PROFESSIONALS

We do extensive tasting on the study trips. You will sample allocated wines that are only poured at the winery, barrel samples and tutored tastings with targeted, professional learning objectives.

Here are some examples from previous Wine Scholar Guild tours:

    • A Champagne producer in the Aube organized a tasting of the same base champagne with different levels of dosage to demonstrate sugar’s effect on flavor.
    • A winemaker in Beaujolais poured wines from each of the ten crus alongside rock samples from the vineyards where the grapes were grown while pointing out the subtle differences in mineral composition as made manifest in flavor profile.

    2. GO TO THE SOURCE

There is no doubt that the best way to really understand a wine or a wine region is to go there and immerse yourself in everything that makes it special. This “package of reality” is something you just can not glean from books.

    3. MEET THE WINEMAKERS

Meeting the winemakers is a real highlight for our tour participants. On previous trips, groups have met the winemakers at renowned estates such as Louis Roederer in Champagne, Chateau Cheval Blanc in Bordeaux, Clos de Tart in Burgundy, Zind-Humbrecht in Alsace (among others). These are unique and highly rewarding opportunities. In a professional context, meeting the winemakers also allows you to establish first-hand relationships with existing or potential suppliers.

Producers visited during past study trips include:

    4. VISIT BOTH ICONIC AND BELOW THE RADAR ESTATES

We visit both long-established, well-known wineries and as well as lesser-known, top-quality estates to give you the opportunity to see the icons as well as discover hidden gems and upcoming stars.

"The WSG study trip complemented my sommelier training in many ways. It gave me access to many producers that I would have not visited on my own, it brought me to small appellations that I didn’t know was so important in the wine industry since the ‘books’ only had one paragraph about it, it also connected me to new, up and coming producers that are doing things differently and achieving great results, and last, it showed me history and tradition in my own time."  Paula Maia, Owner and Wine Director at Oak Wine Bar in Brooklyn

As a wine lover, you know that there is much to learn about wine. One of the fastest and most enjoyable ways to do this is by taking a wine tour and going directly to the source. Important wine notions such as terroir, appellations or winemaking methods become so much easier to understand when one experiences and learns about them first-hand.

Our wine tours also provide opportunities to taste an extensive number of wines during our visits at the wineries and meals.  This will help improve your wine tasting skills during the tastings led by the tour instructor and the wine producers themselves.

Visit both iconic and below the radar estates

Meeting the local winemakers is also a real highlight for our wine tour participants. On previous trips, groups have met the winemakers at renowned estates such as Champagne Dom Perignon or Chateau Cheval Blanc in Bordeaux, for example. These are unique opportunities that wine enthusiasts will always remember.

Producers visited during past study trips include:

Visiting iconic wine regions gives a face to the wines on your wine list and provide anecdotes and vivid memories that you can share with your customers. This helps bring legitimacy and confidence when selling your wines.  A key aspect of the trip is eating at fabulous local restaurants and pairing the meal with fine wines of the region. These pairings can also prove to be a real inspiration for you when you are back home.

“I thought the itinerary was excellent. Every chateau brought an amazing experience. It was nice that you had a variety of producers that used different methods/equipment so that there were new things to discover as we went along (if every winery tour was the same it would have been horribly redundant so we appreciated that). All the restaurants were amazing. We never had a bad meal that is for sure. Mary also did a phenomenal job managing all the details. -Karen Aspinall, wine enthusiast

Wine Scholar Guild Study Tours for Sommeliers

The Wine Scholar Guild study tours provide unique educational experiences for sommeliers.

Enjoy the opportunity to taste unique wines that are only poured locally at the wineries.
